In 1890, Joseph Opinel from Albiez-le-Vieux created a small folding Opinel knife that was practical, compact, and affordable. Originally, he made this knife for his friends and never imagined that he was creating a timeless design that would survive two World Wars, economic crises, and enter the digital age with the same elegance it displayed at its first introduction.

The blade is manufactured from either carbon steel or Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel. These two versions can be easily distinguished by their markings. Knives made from carbon steel feature the black “Carbone” inscription, while stainless steel models are marked with the word “Inox” on the blade. Opinel knives with carbon steel blades are known for their long-lasting sharpness.

The wooden handle is crafted from solid beech wood and coated with a clear varnish that ensures the durability and resistance of this natural material. In special series, Opinel knives may also feature handles made from rosewood, olive wood, ivory, or be available in limited-edition metal versions.

Since 1955, Opinel knives have been equipped with the Viroblock safety lock, patented by Opinel, which prevents the knife from accidentally opening or closing.
